In Scotland's turbulent past it was the custom of clan chiefs to give their followers a metal plate of their crest, to be worn as a badge of allegiance. This crest was fastened to the clothing with a strap and buckle.
When not in use, the belt was coiled around the crest and this convention is used in the clan crest badges of today.
Only a clan chief may wear the crest without the strap and buckle.

Not sure of your clan affiliation?
Many Scottish families are allies of larger clans. These allied families are called septs and may properly wear the clan badge of the clan to which they are affiliated.
Search for your family's clan here. Please remember that spellings may vary and archaic spellings are the norm rather than the exception.
